Italy & France

by Lia Halsall

This past weekend we’ve been researching and deciding on where we’re going to go for my break during my time working overseas in 2011-2012. Because I’m away for such a long time I’m entitled to take two weeks leave so we’ve agreed on visiting two different countries in Europe, Italy & France.

They’re reasonably close by for me which means less travelling time and best of all no jet lag. Hubby on the other isn’t so lucky but I don’t think he minds considering what he gets in return for it. These are both countries I’ve dreamed about visiting but never considered they’d be a reality, until now that is. Even just thinking about it and talking about it seems surreal. Now it’s becoming a reality and it’s one I’m extremely excited about.

Rome is where we’ll meet up and fly in and out of, but the remainder of the trip will be by rail. That way we can soak up and enjoy more of the scenery whilst travelling through it. I’ve always loved trains so this mode of transportation is going to be perfect. We want to make the most of our time in each country and don’t want to miss a second of it.

In Italy we’re going to visit Rome, Venice & Milan. Some of the things we instantly know we want to see and do are visit the Colosseum in Rome, take a Gondola Ride in Venice and shop in Milan, the fashion capital of the world.

In France, we’re going to visit the French Alps & Paris. I want to visit somewhere that has snow so that’s why we’ve chosen the French Alps. Paris of course has the Eiffel Tower & Notre Dame Cathedral. Then from there we’re taking day tours up to the Normandy D-Day Battlefields & Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux.

Next on our list is to source hubby’s flights, rail passes, tour guides and accommodation. Then once I’m over there and find out when I’m on leave all that we have to do is book everything. If anyone’s travelled to either location I’d love to hear your thoughts on them. All advice is welcome.

Unfortunately our honeymoon was cancelled due to the Bali Bombings. So lets just say we’re making up for it on this holiday. After all, it’s our first real holiday together in 15 years. xxx

How exciting Lia!
We did Italy by train a few years ago and loved it. We started in Rome and found it much smaller than we expected. We ended up with too much time there and not enough in Florence. Florence is dreamy! If you have time I really recommend it. Beautiful architecture. Amazing hand made jewelry and leather shoes/bags/jackets at bargain prices. We only had a Sunday in Milan and it was a bit closed, reminded me of Adelaide on a Sunday! Midweek I think it’d be great if you have a flexible credit card!
We did Paris that trip too. Loved having dinner at 10pm In little bistros. The saint-Germaine area was a good base for shopping and night life.
Have a blast!

I wasn’t sure about visiting Florence. But after your recommendation I think I better reconsider Mish. It all looks so incredible over there and we’re travelling in their autumn/winter which I don’t mind. Where I’m going it’ll be very hot and dusty so that change will be appreciated. xxx
