Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis

by Lia Halsall

Now that’s a mouthful isn’t it, it took me three months just to learn how to pronounce it. LOL!! You see, a lot of competitors in one way or another have to face personal challenges and for me it’s a renal condition called Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis.

Here’s the medical definition: “Glomeruli are structures in the kidney that filter harmful or unnecessary substances out of the body. Each kidney has thousands of glomeruli. Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis is an illness that occurs when scar tissue forms in some of the glomeruli of the kidney. The term “focal” means that some of the glomeruli become scarred, while others remain normal. The term “segmental” means that only part of an individual glomerulus is damaged.”

So what exactly does this mean and how does it effect me. Well basically it means that when my kidney filters protein I lose too much of it out into my urine. Unfortunately a high protein diet puts a lot of unnecessary stress on my kidney which in turn could lead to things like renal failure. My Nephrologist has ever so generously allowed me to have 2gm of protein per kg of body weight which I monitor closely every day. After all, I know where my future will lead me if I don’t listen to her medical advice. My Dad’s there now.

So what is my point you may ask, that challenges although challenges are certainly not excuses but lessons that we can use as a driving force behind us to ensure we live if day as if it were our last. I have a “whatever it takes” attitude of which my husband will never let me forget and for good reason. Nothing will stop me nor should it you. The choice is yours!

Wow Lia,

That article was very inspiring! It must feel great to feel so in control and capable of anything! That was how I felt after I completed my 12 week challenge and I am determined to get back there again.

My thought and prayers are with your Dad.

love

Ali what doesn’t kill me will only make me stronger. The mind is a powerful thing and shouldn’t be understimated. Thank you for your prayers though, life has it’s way of working itself out. We just have to be patient, that’s all. :o ) xo
