Shut up and do it!

by Lia Halsall

I feel yet another tough love post coming on ladies. LOL!!

Just recently, over on the forum a topic came up and it got me to thinking. Time and time again I hear and read of girls having issues of being interrupted whilst they’re trying to train at the gym. I never quite understood why this was even a problem in the first place when from my perspective it was rather a simple solution.

Here’s what I do and I never have any problems. People leave me alone, after all I’m at the gym to train not socialise.

1. My iPod is on and playing as soon as I get out of the car before I even enter the gym.

2. I wear a hat to restrict eye contact with any gym users.

3. I also avoid eye contact with any gym users.

4. I don’t smile so therefore don’t look approachable let alone friendly. LOL!!

4. I certainly don’t talk to anyone. Let me stress again, I’m there to train, not socialise.

5. I give off a “approach at own caution” type vibe when I’m in there. This works a treat.

IF and I mean IF I am interrupted which seldom happens I simply tell them “I’m sorry, I’m training and on a limited time schedule. Is this really important?” Call me rude, call me cold, but this is my time and I will not be interrupted unless it’s important and/or urgent.

That and I don’t really care what other people think. I’m not there to win a popularity contest. They certainly don’t care if I’m goal orientated and on a schedule for training and nutrition. This isn’t about them, this is about me. I have to put me first and foremost.

The picture says it all and if all else fails, try one or more of the above techniques that work for me and let me know how you get on. ;)

I’m pretty much the same, Lia. I HATE it when men sit on a bench, of which there are few, and chin wag during their rests. I ask if I can use the bench while they talk and they say they are using it. Grrr. I am there to train and get out. Stuff the chat!

I have the same attitude Lia- i’ve been at my gym for years and everyone knows that the minute i pick up a weight i’m in “F@#K off i’m training mode”! And if i do get interrupted its just a matter of telling them that we can chat when i’m finished, or on the treadmill. Once told, people understand and will respect your dedication to train hard… and sometimes it rubs off on them too!

Being in the military our gyms are very very different compared to civilian ones. Not only are the venues and equipment different but also the mindset.

I like your way of thinking though Chelle. If by our taking our health and fitness seriously rubs off then that’s a good thing. :) xxx

I don’t doubt that you would intimidate the women Tara. You’re not alone there. LOL!! It’s not always a bad thing. ;) xxx

I used to feel that I was “intruding” on others in the weights area, but after training several times a week for over a year at the same place, I feel that I’ve earned my place…SO the other day, hubby and I were training together, and a couple of benches away were three teenage boys having their chin-wag…one of them was sitting on the bench “nursing” the dumbell I needed for my next set…they literally sat there for over five minutes just chatting and laughing…when it was time for my set I walked up to them and said “I need those dumbells for my next set, so could I just have them while you chat, or do you need to just hold it?”Needless to say, I did my set and returned the dumbells to them (still chatting away)

Sandra I love it! And that’s exactly how it should be because after all, you’re there to train your body and not your mouth. LOL!! xxx

I don’t have much of a problem in this department.  I think the guys at my gym just see me as one of them now.  Well some of them… and then there are the other few who hate that I train in the main area, and then there are others who just stare the whole time.. Anyhoo I digress….  My approach is, I have my ipod on, music blarring, but I am also more than happy to have a chat in between sets.  I have made quite a few really good friends via the gym.  For me it is a social thing too.  I love chatting to like minded individuals.  note though, they are all males.  None of the girls will come up and talk to me, call it intimidation or whatever…….

I’m the same Lia … I don’t have time to sit around and chat.  I put on my MP3 player and pretty much get the job done.

Oh Lia.  You are singing my song.  I do all that with the exception of the cap, and it’s me and my iPod or the Resident Niece who spots me (lucky girl).  The other thing I do is, I cycle the gyms I use.  I joined a chain of gyms that are around the world and open 24/7.  So I don’t go at the same time to the same gym.  I rotate them, depending upon needs and location.  I’m focussed on my needs, and my needs only when I step through those doors.  I think my grunting may put off some of the people from talking to me as well, perhaps?  But then again, most of the girls aren’t in the weights room either.  Easy fixed.  “I’m more of a man than you’ll ever be, and more woman than you will ever have” runs through my head.  LOL

I train at our military gym and have just started in a civvie one on Saturdays. It’s different, that’s for sure Laynie. We do what we have to do because we’re dedicated and passionate about life. Aint nothing wrong with that my friend. ;) xxx

Couldn’t agree more. I train at the gym I work at (stupid move but ATM can’t afford to go pay for membership elsewhere) so I probably get this happen more than the norm as literally everyone who comes in there knows me. Given that I work there full time, I want to spend as little time in there outside work hours as possible so I like to focus, train, and get the hell out of there. Unfortunately I get stopped all the time by members wanting me to fix equipment, show them a new exercise, ask about what is up on the TV screens (no joke), write them a new program (yes, right there and then) etc. Why they can’t walk over to someone who is in uniform and clearly NOT training – beyond me. I have started wearing my iPod at ALL times and even if I hear someone call me I pretend I don’t hear anything. I have even had some come up to me when I have done this and literally put their face within about an inch of mine to get my attention!! I wish I could be blunt but because I am an employee I have to be diplomatic about it all and not offend anyone…I think my next step is to have a new training t-shirt made – IM HERE TO TRAIN NOT TO WORK SO PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE!!

Vicki your circumstances are very different from most. But in saying that, by using a more polite method of explaining that you’re busy training and then referring them to one of the other staff would be the beginning of you setting standards that would hopefully one day be respected by the members. Sooner or later they should stop asking you. ;) xxx
