Sleep, the neglected component!

by Lia Halsall

Sleeping, the neglected component! We all do it , but do we do it enough? That is the question. Sleep is usually the first thing we sacrifice for one reason or another, and before we know it we’re wishing the week away in anticipation for the weekend so we can sleep in.

Did you know that we spend a third of our lives sleeping? The amount of sleep we need can vary depending on our age and health. Here are some interesting facts about sleep that may be of some interest to you.

Facts

★ Adults typically need between 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night

★ Sleep is vital for our health and well-being, and is just as important as diet and exercise

★ Sleep deprivation = an increased cortisol level & premature ageing

★ Watching television or using your laptop in bed will hinder the quality of sleep

★ You can’t catch up on sleep you’ve lost

For those of you like me who struggle with insomnia getting a decent nights sleep is an on going fight, but not impossible. Here are some things I do to help me get a better nights sleep:

1. Daily Exercise
I exercise first thing in the morning so that I’m not over stimulating my body or my mind.

2. Nutrition
I eat a healthy well balanced diet and avoid all stimulants after lunch and especially before bed like coffee and alcohol.

3. Lifestyle Changes
I ensure I take time out each day for some form of relaxation therapy for the mind and the body.

4. My Bedroom
It’s comfortable, dark, quiet and designed for two things, sleeping and romance.

5. Bedtime Ritual
1 hour before bed the television and computer are both turned off and I sit down with a cup of chamomile tea in the lounge room in the peace and quiet. Then I place 4 drops of Rescue Sleep on my tongue and turn in for what I hope will be a good night’s sleep.

Here’s to a good night’s sleep. *zzz*

Rescue sleep is da bomb! Its got a special place on my bedside table lol. Original Rescue Remedy resides in my handbag, bathroom and in the car. I’m a little obsessed haha… but my work distributes it so i’ve always got tonnes on hand!!! x

I just haven’t been consistent enough in taking it but that’s all about to change now that I’ve given up drinking Chelle. xxx

Sleep is always neglected by me and yet I know I need my 9 hours. It’s a sad fact. And my best TV and laptop time is in bed. I get my privacy in my room which I love. But I do like the idea of turning it all off and making sure that I relax with a book for an hour before bed. I used to always read myself to sleep and lately my reading has been neglected in favour of TV and laptop. Good topic!

Watching tv and working on the laptop in bed may be your best time but it’s stimulating your mind which in turn doesn’t equate to quality sleep. The more and more I research the more and more I learn about it Jadey. It’s actually quite fascinating. xxx

Oh okay, I’ll try that tonight and see how I go if I have trouble getting to sleep Chelle. Thanks for the tip.

Still working my way through pn as I’m not officially kicking off with it until 11th January. It’ll be a combination of pn and paleo for athletes. Like everything, you have to tailor your nutrition to suit your individual requirements and it’s not something I ever rush into. ;) xxx

You’re exactly right, there is definitely no ‘one plan suits all’. I have quite a few food intoleranaces too, plus i’m not a huge meat eater either so i have put my own spin on the plan. Hope rescue sleep works as well for you as it does for me x

Is rescue sleep something you can take for an extended period of time Chelle?

It sure is. Bach flowers are not toxic to the body and as far as i’m aware, you dont build up a tolerance to them either. I’ve been using sleep for over a year now. Their Cravings Control spray is really good too. I now use it if i have food cravings during the week outside of my allowable ‘cheat meals’. It may come in handy if you get any urges to consume alcohol x

That’s good to know. Starting tonight I’m going to include it in my bedtime ritual and really make a conscience effort to stick with it so I get the best quality sleep I can.

I haven’t heard of the craving control spray, very interesting. *hmmm* xxx

Cool, let me know how you go. The white chesnut in it, helps by switching the mind off. Maybe do some deep breathing too to relax the mind.Craving control is by Martin + Pleasance as well, you’ll only find it in your larger pharmacies and health food stores. If they don’t sell it you can always ask them to order it with their next Integria order!!!! x
