Aspartame

by Lia Halsall

Michelle NazaroffI’m not posting this week’s menu up because I’m eating mainly leftovers. There’s a combination of organic chicken, Atlantic salmon, snapper, prawns and a couple of lamb cutlets that I’ll cook up for dinners this week. I’ll be eating something different every night this week which will be something different in it’s own right for me. I’m using what I have left in the fridge, freezer and pantry ready for my new nutrition plan. Out with the old and in with the new. I haven’t quite got the right balance or the right timings nailed yet so I’ve asked for a second opinion from a fellow competitor I trust and respect, Michelle Nazaroff. Her approach too food is much more holistic than the average bodybuilder and much more to my liking. It also coincides nicely with my organic diet and eating of whole foods. More and more I’m getting away from eating processed foods and although I don’t mind eating it from time to time my system on the other hand has other ideas about it. Once I hear back from her this week I’m make all the necessary changes and you’ll see a new and improved nutrition plan posted up next week.

On a separate note, I’m in awe of the package she’s presented on stage this year. I’ve also got this picture on my iMac at home and on my iPhone. Michelle is truly inspirational and a great ambassador for our sport of natural bodybuilding. You can clearly see in the image above how incredible an athlete she is who’s overcome some very big challenges in life to say the least. If you don’t know her story then I suggest you check out her website.

Another thing I’ve learned more about this week is aspartame (Code 951). For the record I’m against consuming any product that contains this ingredient and unfortunately for my husband he’s had to say a final goodbye to his good friend coke zero. It’s a huge subject of controversy but I know that for us it’s not what we want in our diets in any way shape or form. I look at it this way, asbestos never used to be treated or handled the way it is now and people are dying from it’s exposure. You can never know for sure about anything these days because with time and technology anything’s possible.

Happy Monday!

Great pic of Michelle…dang-she is just ripped!
I agree with your view on the aspartame….we haven’t touched anything with it for years.
Enjoy your leftovers! :-)

That is an awesome, awesome pic!

Totally agree on the aspartame, and actually ANY form of artificial sugar (including splenda/sucralose) as it caused me major stomach problems and pain, and still does if I ever have it. Its quite scary when you actually read up on the stuff!

Hi Lia,
That is a great picture of Michelle, It’s easy to see why she inspires you.
I agree on the aspartame from – I didn’t realise it was in Coke Zero – Coke Zero doesn’t agree with me anyway. I stopped using sugar substitutes a while back (probably while I was prgnant actually) I figured that the real thing isn’t that many calories and at least it is natural.

It’s so great to see more athletes flying the healthy comp prep approach rather than getting up on stage and looking great on the outside but are all messed up on the inside. Food for thought… literally!

We are what we eat and I want to be healthy Lindy-Lou! It may have something to do with my role models. ;) xxx

I have always stayed away frpm aspartame because i have phenylketonuria-variant(you may have seen the warnings for phenylketonurics on labels that list aspartame).

I like using SweetLeaf Sweetener Stevia! I understand it is the only stevia brand or sweetener on the market with 0 calories, 0 carbs, and a 0 glcemic index! Stevia also has great health benefits, and since I have been using it, I haven’t really craved sweets! (which is a good reason for me to keep using it!)

I tried stevia before (tablet & liquid) but couldn’t notice the difference Yoda. It was as if I didn’t sweeten my coffee at all am I doing something wrong?

Wow. Usually if someone has a problem with the taste of stevia, they use an inferior brand, or they use too much–for the latter, it’s just way too sweet! This is definitely new territory. Stevia is many, many times sweeter than sugar, so that is really weird! That has definitely never happened to me!
Um… was the coffee really strong? um….what was the brand you used? Some brands are now putting in things that mask their aftertaste. I nderstand that aftertastes come from the chemicals and solvents that are used during extration. SweetLeaf is the only brand that uses only pure water during extraction, so there is no aftertaste and therefore, is the most natural. Um…maybe there’s something else in there that may delute the sweetness a little? I don’t know, I’m just thinking. How much did you use? Of course, it shouldn’t take very much stevia to taste the sweetness! Weird!
If you let know more details about when you used it and how you used it, maybe I can help you better!

Heavenly Herbs is what I buy and I buy it from my organic store in both tablet form and a liquid concentrate. I only drink decaf now and it’s never strong. I used two tablets in the coffee I was drinking and it made absolutely no difference. I then tried with two drops and the same again, no sweetness.

Maybe I should try it again, it has been a while now?

I guess you could try it again…although I don’t really know how time would be a variable. I don’t know why you couldn’t taste the difference. I know that when I use Sweetleaf that’s not a problem. I’ve never heard of Heavenly Herbs. That doesn’t mean that the problem is the brand– or that it isn’t the brand. All I can tell you is that I definitely have not had that problem with SweetLeaf. You could try it again, or perhaps you could give SweetLeaf a whirl–if you still can’t taste the sweetness again. For information about it, you can go to http://www.sweetleaf.com I wish I had more to tell you.

I’ll try it again and if I get the same result I’ll try using sweet leaf. Nothing ventured nothing gained right Yoda. :)

Michelle’s awesome isn’t she! My diet is organic and all whole foods now so everything that doesn’t fall into that category must go. Of course it’s not always going to be that way as I’m not perfect and I don’t live in a perfect world but I’m going to try my very best through Raechelle. xxx

Hilary I’ve even had it printed out in hard copy for my inspiration wall. Now that we eat primarily organic it just made sense to remove any further artificial products that we possibly could, we’re never going to be 100% but near enough is good enough for me and my health and well being. xxx

We’re learning more and more about food additives and their numbers so we can eliminate the bad ones for our food Andj. Information isn’t always readily available so sometimes we have to be proactive and dig that little bit deeper. xxx
