Support Networks

by Lia Halsall

Daniel's Post-it Note

Support networks are a crucial part for any figure competitor. For me, that’s my wonderful husband. Above is a post-it note I found on the fridge when I got home from one of my morning walks and is a perfect example of how a little goes a long way in helping me to help myself. His support means the absolute world to me and I’d possibly struggle without it.

Support networks come in all different forms like family, friends, coaches, even possibly work colleagues. We all know how difficult it is for these people to truly understand and appreciate what it is we do. Because let’s face it, the large majority of society either doesn’t get or want to get what it is we do and nor should they have to. This is our choice, not theirs.

So when we do find that someone special who’s willing to fulfil that role it’s important that we return that favour back. “do unto others as you would have them do unto you”. We’re high maintenance athletes and require a lot of work and effort especially during competition preparation. It all comes down to the age old concept of you have to give in order to receive. So ensure you take the time to appreciate and say thank you in a way that is fitting.

Once again, I’m practicing time management at it’s best by typing this post whilst I’m sitting in a pathology waiting room for two hours. I’m having bloods and a glucose test done requested by my gynecologist. Normally I’m not a fan of anything that involves a needle but some of the tests ordered I am interested in from an athletes perspective. T3, T4, Cortisol & Testosterone, all hormones that impact my PCOS. But as an athlete these results will help me to see if there’s anything going on underneath the surface I may need to be aware of or take into consideration. So we shall see when I go back for my next appointment next Tuesday.

I now have five weeks remaining until my short term goal #3. I booked my flights on the weekend and will be heading up north for four days to the Sunshine Coast & Brisbane. I have multiple commitments whilst there and plan on making the most of everything because life’s too short for anything less. But more about that a little closer to the date. So I’m kicking everything into a higher gear from this point on to ensure I achieve this goal. So instead of five days on and two days off it’s going to be six days on and one day off as well as improving on last weeks results via my daily checklist.

I’m excited about this week and what it has in store for me I hope you are too.
